Methodology & assumptions
Volume is calculated as patio length × width × (base depth in inches ÷ 12), then divided by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards. A waste percentage is added to account for spillage and — most importantly — compaction: loose crushed stone settles by about 20% once tamped, so a base ordered at the loose volume alone falls short of the finished compacted depth. The result is divided by the coverage per bag (0.0185 cu yd for a 0.5 cu ft bag) and rounded up to the next whole bag.

- A standard paver patio or walkway uses a 4-inch compacted base of crushed stone. Driveways and other areas that carry vehicle weight need a deeper base, typically 6-8 inches, since the base course is what actually bears the load and spreads it over the subgrade — the pavers and sand on top just provide the wearing surface.
- Why does compacted base need extra material ordered?
- Loose crushed stone settles by about 20% once it is tamped with a plate compactor, so the loose volume you spread is noticeably more than the finished compacted depth. This calculator's "Compaction allowance (20%)" waste option accounts for that settling — pick it (instead of the 10% standard option) whenever your order needs to land on a specific finished depth after tamping, not just cover the footprint once.
- What is the difference between paver base and bedding sand?
- Base (crushed, angular stone that compacts into a firm structural layer) sits directly on the subgrade and does the load-bearing work. Bedding sand is a thin, unwaterlogged leveling layer — usually about 1 inch — spread on top of the compacted base just before laying the pavers, to let them settle into a flat, even surface. The two are not interchangeable: sand alone will not support the base course's job.
- Can I skip the base and lay pavers directly on soil?
- No. Skipping the compacted base is the single most common cause of paver failure — without it, pavers sink unevenly, shift, and develop trip hazards as the soil beneath compresses and washes out under foot and vehicle traffic.
