Lorem Ipsum Generator: Text by Paragraphs, Words or Characters
Choose paragraphs, sentences, words or an exact number of characters and get lorem ipsum as plain text, HTML <p> tags or a Markdown list. The example below is 3 paragraphs, 163 words, 1,038 characters, starting “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…”. Set characters to 155 to fill a meta description to the character, ending on a whole word. The same seed always gives the same text; Regenerate picks a new one. The words come from the standard Latin passage, which is a scrambled adaptation of Cicero’s De finibus (45 BC), not Cicero’s own sentences.

Character limits to fill with placeholder text (as of 2026)
| Where | Limit | Generator setting | How it is counted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta description | about 155 characters | Characters: 155 | No fixed limit: Google shortens snippets by pixel width, usually after about 155–160 characters. |
| SEO title tag | about 60 characters | Characters: 60 | Titles longer than about 60 characters are often cut off in search results. |
| X (Twitter) post | up to 280 characters | Characters: 280 | Each link counts as 23; emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as 2. X Premium accounts can post longer. |
| SMS text message | up to 160 characters | Characters: 160 | 160 GSM-7 characters, or 70 if any character is outside GSM-7 (emoji, Hebrew, Arabic, curly quotes). Longer texts are split into segments of 153 or 67. |
| YouTube video title | up to 100 characters | Characters: 100 | Spaces count. Shorter titles are less likely to be cut off in search and on phones. |
The standard passage, sentence by sentence
| Sentence | Text | Words |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. | 19 |
| 2 | Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. | 17 |
| 3 | Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. | 16 |
| 4 | Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum. | 17 |
Cicero’s Latin and the lorem ipsum opening
| Text | Words | What to notice |
|---|---|---|
| Cicero, De finibus 1.10.32 (the line the opening traces back to) | neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet consectetur adipisci velit | Real Latin, a sentence about pain (dolor). Editions punctuate it differently, so punctuation and capitals are left out here. |
| Standard opening | lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit | “Dolorem” has lost its first syllable to become “lorem”, which is not a Latin word, and “adipisci” has become “adipiscing”. |
| Words in both | ipsum, dolor, sit, amet, consectetur | The rest of the standard passage is likewise cut, respelled and reordered, so it is not meaningful Latin. |

How to generate lorem ipsum text
- Choose what to count. Pick Paragraphs, Sentences, Words or Characters under “Generate by”, then type how many. Characters fills the text to exactly that length, which suits a meta description or a title tag.
- Pick the output. Plain text separates paragraphs with a blank line. HTML wraps each paragraph in p tags. Markdown gives one list item per paragraph. Tick the box to begin with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…”.
- Regenerate if you want different text. Regenerate draws a new random seed. To get a result back later, type its seed in the Seed box with the same settings.
- Copy it. Press Copy and paste the text into your design, template or mock-up.
Frequently asked questions
- What is lorem ipsum?
- Lorem ipsum is placeholder text for layouts and mock-ups. Its words are Latin-looking but it is not a message: it lets people judge type, spacing and line length without reading the copy.
- Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
- Not really. The standard paragraph is built from real Latin words, but it is a scrambled adaptation of Cicero’s writing, with letters changed and words cut, so it does not make sense as Latin. “Lorem” itself is not a Latin word.
- Where does lorem ipsum come from?
- Its opening traces back to Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”), written in 45 BC: book 1, sections 32 to 33. The line it starts from, in lower case and without punctuation, is “neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet consectetur adipisci velit”. Who first adapted it into the standard paragraph, and when, is not something this page claims to know.
- How do I generate exactly 155 characters of lorem ipsum?
- Choose Characters under “Generate by” and type 155. The text is 155 characters, spaces included, ends on a whole word and a full stop, and never cuts a word in half. The same works for 60 (a title tag), 160 (one SMS) or 280 (an X post). The count is of the text itself, not of any HTML or Markdown around it.
- Why does the same text come back?
- The generator is deterministic. A seed (a number) decides every word, so the same seed and settings always give the same text. That makes mock-ups repeatable. Regenerate picks a new seed from your browser’s cryptographic random source and shows it in the Seed box.
- Can I use the text freely?
- Yes. Cicero’s Latin has been in the public domain for a very long time, and the text here is just its words put in a random order by your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
- Should I ship a page with lorem ipsum in it?
- No. It is for the design stage. Before launch, check the layout with real copy, because real words and headings are different lengths from the placeholder.
- What do the HTML and Markdown outputs look like?
- HTML wraps each paragraph in an opening and closing p tag, one paragraph per line. Markdown starts each paragraph with “- ” to make a list. With Sentences, Words or Characters there is a single block, so a single paragraph or list item.
How it works
The generator is a small seeded pseudo-random number generator (mulberry32) drawing words from the 63 distinct words of the standard Latin passage. Each sentence has 6 to 16 words, with lengths clustering in the middle, no word twice in a row, a capital first letter, up to two commas in longer sentences and a full stop at the end. A paragraph has 3 to 7 sentences. For a word target, the words are grouped into sentences so that no sentence is left with fewer than four words. For a character target the text follows the normal sentence pattern until the last 16 or so characters, then chooses whole words that make the total come out exactly right, ending with a full stop. Characters count spaces and, with several paragraphs, the blank line between them; HTML tags and Markdown markers are not counted. “Start with Lorem ipsum” places “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.” first. Regenerate takes a seed from crypto.getRandomValues; nothing is stored or sent.
