Days Between Dates Calculator
To find the days between two dates, subtract the start date from the end date. January 1 to December 31, 2026 is 364 days, or 365 if you count both the first and the last day. That is 52 weeks, or 11 months, 30 days, with 260 business days (Monday to Friday) and 250 after the US federal holidays. Enter any two dates below.

How to count the days between two dates by hand
- Count the days left in the start month. Subtract the start day from the number of days in that month. From March 20 in a 31-day month, 11 days are left.
- Add the whole months in between. Add the length of each full month between the two dates, using 29 days for February in a leap year.
- Add the days of the end month. Add the day of the month of the end date. The total is the number of days from the start date to the end date.
- Decide about the end date. The total does not count the start day itself. If you want both the first and the last day included, as for an event that runs through both, add 1.
Frequently asked questions
- How many days are in a year?
- A common year has 365 days and a leap year 366, because February gets a 29th day. Over the 400-year Gregorian cycle a year averages 365.2425 days. 2026 has 365 days; 2028 is the next leap year.
- Does the count include the end date?
- By default the result is the end date minus the start date, which counts one of the two ends: January 1 to January 2 is 1 day. Turn on "Include the end date" to count both the first and the last day, which adds 1. That is the right choice for a trip or an event that runs through both dates.
- What are business days?
- Business days are Monday to Friday. The calculator can also skip the eleven US federal holidays, on the day they are observed: a holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before, one on a Sunday the Monday after. It does not count the start date and does count the end date, the usual convention for "within 10 business days"; with "Include the end date" on, it counts both.
- How are months counted between two dates?
- Whole months first, then the leftover days. A month is counted when the same day number comes around again; if the month is too short, its last day counts instead. So January 31 to February 28, 2026 is 1 month, and January 31 to March 1 is 1 month and 1 day. "In months" also shows the total as a decimal, using the average month of 30.44 days.
- How many business days are in 2026?
- 2026 has 261 weekdays (Monday to Friday). After the eleven US federal holidays, all of which fall on or are observed on weekdays in 2026, that leaves 250 working days.
- Why does another calculator give one day more?
- Most likely it counts both the start and the end date. Neither is wrong; they answer slightly different questions. "Include the end date" switches this calculator to the same convention.
- Does daylight saving time change the number of days?
- No. This calculator counts calendar days, not 24-hour blocks, so a day with a clock change is still one day. For hours between two times, where a clock change does matter, use the time calculator.
How it works
Each date is turned into a day number (days since January 1, 1970) with integer arithmetic on the Gregorian calendar, so time zones and daylight saving time cannot shift the count; dates before 1583 use the Gregorian rules extended backwards. The total is the end day number minus the start day number, plus one with "Include the end date". Weeks are the total divided by 7. Years, months and days add whole months first (a month ending on a day the target month lacks lands on that month's last day), then count the leftover days. Business days count Monday to Friday, in closed form, then subtract the US federal holidays of 5 U.S.C. § 6103 on their observed dates, from 1971 on (Juneteenth from 2021). Inauguration Day, state holidays and one-off closures by executive order are not included. Everything runs in your browser.
