Computed from the rules of 5 U.S.C. § 6103. The calculator skips the day off, not the legal date. Inauguration Day (January 20 after a presidential election) is a holiday only for employees in the Washington, DC area, so it is not skipped.

When a holiday falls on a weekend

A holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before; one on a Sunday, the Monday after. When January 1 is a Saturday, the Friday before is December 31 of the previous year.

How to count business days between two dates

  1. Enter the start and end dates. Pick both dates. If the end is before the start, the calculator swaps them for you.
  2. Choose what counts. Tick "Include the start date" and "Include the end date" to count each of them, "Exclude weekends" to count Monday to Friday only, and "Exclude US federal holidays" to skip the holidays on the days they are observed.
  3. Read the count and the holidays skipped. The headline is the number of business days. Open "Holidays skipped" to see which holidays were left out of that range.
  4. To find a date, add or subtract business days. In the second box enter a start date and a number of business days, choose add or subtract, and read the date you land on. The start date itself is not counted.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a business day?
Here a business day is a weekday, Monday to Friday, that is not a US federal holiday (when you choose to skip them). Saturdays and Sundays never count. Your company, bank or court may have its own calendar, so check it for anything contractual.
Is the start date counted?
You choose. The count between two dates has "Include the start date" and "Include the end date". With both ticked, Jun 29, 2026 to Jul 10, 2026 is counted in the example. When you add business days, the start date is never counted: 1 business day after a Friday is the next Monday.
Which holidays are skipped?
The eleven legal public holidays of 5 U.S.C. § 6103: New Year's Day, Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (third Monday in January), Washington's Birthday (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 19, from 2021), Independence Day, Labor Day (first Monday in September), Columbus Day (second Monday in October), Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas Day. They are worked out from those rules for any year from 1971 on, not looked up in a list.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?
For most federal employees a holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before, and one on a Sunday the Monday after (5 U.S.C. § 6103(b)). The calculator skips that observed day. Independence Day 2026 is a Saturday, so Friday, July 3, 2026 is skipped. Because a weekend is not a business day anyway, the legal date itself changes nothing.
What if January 1 is a Saturday?
The Friday before is December 31 of the previous year, so that is the day off, even though it is in a different year. OPM follows this for most employees: New Year's Day 2022 was observed on Friday, December 31, 2021, and New Year's Day 2028 will be observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. A range that ends on December 31 therefore skips it.
Is Inauguration Day a business-day holiday?
Not here. Inauguration Day (January 20, every fourth year after a presidential election, and the next day when it falls on a Sunday) is a legal holiday only for federal employees in the Washington, DC area, so the calculator does not skip it. If your office is there, subtract one day yourself.
Does it include Juneteenth?
Yes, from 2021 on. Juneteenth National Independence Day became a federal holiday in 2021, so earlier years do not skip June 19. It follows the same Saturday-to-Friday, Sunday-to-Monday rule: Juneteenth 2021 was observed on Friday, June 18.
Why is my count different from another calculator?
Usually the start or end date. Without "Include the start date" the example gives 8 business days instead of 9 business days. Other common causes: a company holiday list, a half-day closure, or one-off closures by executive order, which are not included.

How it works

Each date becomes a day number (days since January 1, 1970) with integer arithmetic on the Gregorian calendar, so time zones and daylight saving time cannot shift a count. The range is the dates between start and end, plus or minus the end dates you choose to include. Weekends are removed in closed form (a span of thousands of years is as quick as a week). Each US federal holiday of 5 U.S.C. § 6103 is computed from its rule (a fixed date, or the nth or last weekday of a month) for every year from 1971 on, with Juneteenth from 2021, then moved to its observed day: a Saturday holiday to the Friday before, a Sunday holiday to the Monday after, which for a Saturday January 1 is December 31 of the previous year. Observed days that fall in the range are removed from the count and listed. Adding business days steps forward or back over weekends and holidays and does not count the start date. Inauguration Day, state and bank holidays and one-off closures are not included. Everything runs in your browser.
