Jane Austen quotes

14 verified quotes from 6 works, 1811 to 1817.

Jane Austen (1775–1817) published four novels in her lifetime, starting with Sense and Sensibility (1811) and Pride and Prejudice (1813), all of them anonymously; Northanger Abbey and Persuasion came out together a few months after her death, dated 1818 on the title page but on sale in December 1817.

Most of her lines below belong to characters, whom we name, because Austen’s wit usually arrives in dialogue. Each quote was found word for word in the Project Gutenberg edition we link, with a short note of ours on the scene.

  1. I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.

Mr. Darcy, in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, 1813

Our note: Darcy answers when Elizabeth asks when he first fell in love with her.
