How to work out your exact age by hand
- Count the whole years. Subtract the birth year from the current year. If this year’s birthday has not come yet, take one off.
- Count the whole months since the last birthday. Count the months from the last birthday to the most recent date with the same day number as the birthday. If a month is too short (born on the 31st), its last day counts.
- Count the leftover days. Count the days from that date to today. Born May 15, 1990, on January 1, 2026: 35 years (to May 15, 2025), 7 months (to December 15), and 17 days.
- Convert to totals if you need them. Total months are years × 12 plus the months. Total days are the calendar days between the two dates; divide by 7 for weeks and multiply by 24 for hours.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate my age on a specific date?
- Enter your date of birth, then change the “Age on this date” field to the date you need, such as the day of an exam, a job start or a retirement date. The tool shows the exact age on that date, not just today, along with the birthdays after it.
- How is the age in years, months and days counted?
- Whole years first (the birthdays reached, counting a birthday on the date itself), then whole months, then the leftover days. A month is complete when the same day number comes around again; if the month is too short, its last day counts. This is the usual way ages are given, and the same count the days-between-dates calculator uses.
- When does someone born on February 29 turn a year older?
- In a leap year, on February 29. In the three common years between, there is no February 29, so a convention decides. The more common choice is February 28, the last day of the birth month. Some laws choose March 1 instead: in Hong Kong, for example, the Age of Majority (Related Provisions) Ordinance says the birthday in a common year is March 1. Other places leave it unwritten, so for anything legal, check the local rule. The calculator uses February 28 by default and can switch to March 1; it notes when the two rules give a different age.
- How many days old am I?
- The “In days” row counts the calendar days from your date of birth to the chosen date, with the birth date as day 0. The tool also shows when you reach your next round thousand of days, such as 10,000 days old, about four and a half months after your 27th birthday.
- Why is the age in hours only approximate?
- It multiplies the days by 24. It does not know the time you were born, and it ignores the hour gained or lost when clocks change for daylight saving time. For the exact hours between two times, use the time calculator.
- Does my time zone change my age?
- The age is counted in calendar dates, so the time zone matters only for what “today” is. The tool uses your device’s date: someone in Asia may already be a day older than someone in the Americas at the same moment.
- Is my date of birth sent anywhere?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or sent to analytics. A “Copy link” link contains the date of birth in the address, so share it only with people you want to see it.
How it works
Each date is turned into a day number (days since January 1, 1970) with integer arithmetic on the Gregorian calendar, so time zones and daylight saving time cannot shift the count; dates before 1583 use the Gregorian rules extended backwards. Whole years are the birthdays reached by the chosen date. Months are then added from the birth date the way ISO 8601 date libraries and spreadsheets add them: a day the target month lacks becomes that month’s last day. The leftover is the days. Totals are the day difference (days), divided by 7 (weeks) and multiplied by 24 (hours). For a February 29 birth under the March 1 rule, the years count March 1 birthdays in common years and the months and days are counted from the last birthday. The “age on” date starts as today’s date on your device and can be changed. Everything runs in your browser.
