Methodology & assumptions

We compute room area as length × width in feet, subtract any excluded areas you enter, then add your chosen waste percentage (5% standard, 10% complex) to cover trimming and seam alignment. The result is divided by the roll coverage (about 100 sq ft per roll) and rounded up to the next whole roll.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls of underlayment do I need for my room?
Multiply the room length by width in feet to get the square footage, add 5-10% for waste depending on how complex the layout is, then divide by the coverage per roll (typically about 100 sq ft) and round up to the next whole roll.
Do I need a moisture barrier under my flooring underlayment?
Yes, if you are installing over a concrete slab or in a below-grade room like a basement — moisture can wick up through concrete and warp your flooring over time. Many foam underlayment rolls have a vapor barrier layer built in; if yours does not, add a separate 6-mil poly sheet underneath. Over a wood subfloor above grade, a vapor barrier usually is not required unless your flooring manufacturer specifies one.
How much overlap or waste should I plan for?
Underlayment rolls are butt-jointed edge to edge (not overlapped) and taped at the seams, so waste is low. Budget about 5% extra for a simple rectangular room to cover trimming and seam alignment, and bump that to about 10% for rooms with closets, angled walls, or multiple connected rooms where offcuts add up.
What thickness of underlayment should I buy?
Most foam underlayment for laminate or engineered hardwood runs 2mm to 3mm thick. Check your flooring manufacturer's installation instructions first — some laminate warranties require a specific thickness or a built-in vapor barrier, and using the wrong underlayment can void the warranty.
