- How much extra hardwood should I buy for waste?
- Budget 10% extra for a standard straight-plank layout running parallel or perpendicular to the walls, and 15% for a diagonal or otherwise complex layout — angled cuts waste more material at the edges of the room.
- Do I need to let hardwood acclimate before installing it, and does that change how much I buy?
- Yes. Solid hardwood should acclimate in the room for at least 3-5 days (sometimes longer in humid climates) before installation, and engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable and typically needs only 24-72 hours. Acclimation does not change the quantity you buy, but always store the extra waste-percentage boxes unopened on-site during that period so they adjust with the rest of the floor.

- Always round up. Hardwood is milled in dye lots and runs, so buying one extra box up front is far cheaper and safer than running short mid-project and needing a rush order that may not match your existing floor.
